The United States throws away enough food for so many people every year
Agency. The United States consumes about a third of all food produced. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPH) has released a report. The United States has previously pledged to cut food prices by 2030.
Millions of dollars are wasted on food waste and it also affects climate change. Scientists say that when food grains are dumped at the landfill site, it emits methane gas which affects the environment.
“As stated in the Paris Agreement in 2015, it is necessary to change the food system in the United States to reduce global warming to 1.5 million,” the report said.
“Even if we could stop fossil fuels, the current practice of dumping food waste would not achieve the goal of lowering global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius,” the report said. The EPH estimates that between 73 million and 152 million metric tons of food grains are wasted in the United States each year.
In 2015, the US Department of Agriculture and the EPH, in collaboration with the private sector and community organizations, announced that food waste would be reduced by half by 2030. However, they have not succeeded. In 2010, 31 percent of all food grains produced in the United States were wasted.
